Video editing in Sony Vegas
In this tutorial you will learn a few basics of the video editing software Sony Vegas. We will use Sony Vegas 8.0 Pro, but the basics are about the same in different versions.
We will start with just looking around and becoming familiar with the interface.
First, open Vegas.
It may seem a little bit empty, but there's so much in it, let start by actually importing a video into Vegas.
I just opened a folder with some small skateboarding videos and photos in Windows. Now simply drag a video file into Vegas.
Your video will be automatically imported and put on the timeline. If you haven't done this yet, drag the video to the left, so it will start on 0:00. Now your screen should look like the picture underneath.
To check if you selected the right piece of footage, you can preview it by clicking the play button at the bottom of the screen.
If you pause the video, there are three ways to go back to the beginning of the video.
- The red arrow indicated below: you just click and hold the marker with your mouse and drag it to the left. This is terribly annoying slow, though it can be handy if you want to see an exact frame.
- The green arrow: move that shape to the left or right, and the further you're going to the left or right the faster you will go.
- But the best and most easy method to just start at the beginning is by clicking the triangle in the blue box, though your video will start playing instantly. If you don't want your video to play, your best option is the 2nd method to drag the green arrow to the left.
Now that you're getting comfortable moving around in your video, let's try cutting a part of it out. This can be handy to remove bad or boring parts from a video. There are multiple ways to do this.
To cut away parts at the beginning or end of the video, you can simply grab the edge of your video and drag it to the left (if you do it to the right, all you get extra will just be a repeat of what you already had). As you can see, when you click and hold the edge, the edge will glow. Then you can drag the edge to the left or right. You can also do this at the beginning of your footage.
If you want to cut out a part in the middle of your video, you need a different method.
First, you need to split your footage. Move the marker to the point where you want to split it, then press "s" on your keyboard and you should have two clips. You can move them away from each other like this.
Now if you want to delete one of the parts, just select it by clicking on it, and press "delete" on your keyboard.
There's one more thing in this tutorial, just to finish the basics. I will show you how to render your finished footage, so it will become an .avi film and you can put it onto youtube, a dvd, or just on your computer, whatever you want to do with it.
Click "File" > "Render as" like shown in this picture:
The following screen will pop up:
Give your video a name and save it. Don't mess around with the other things, the default values should be good.
I hope this helped you, have fun!
